Helping Out At Green-Wood Cemetery – Astor Apiaries

Helping Out At Green-Wood Cemetery

Many think of New York City as the "concrete jungle". Very little thought goes to the fabulous green spaces around the city in parks, gardens, plazas, and even cemeteries. Earlier this year we were introduced to the folks at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. They've been keeping bees on site for the last few years and wanted to expand the beekeeping program as well as the production of their special honey, affectionately named "The Sweet Hereafter". We were more than happy to help them scale up the operation.

This season we are working hard to manage and promote strong colonies at the cemetery, as well as produce a very special honey for Green-Wood's members and visitors. We take the care of these hives very seriously because the honey GW produces is a very tangible link to those who have passed. Having already spent many days on the property setting up nearly half of their hives, we've been stopped by curious visitors who've shared their appreciation for the GW beekeeping program, as well as the good feelings and special memories stirred up when they're enjoying a jar of the honey produced there.

Between the natural beauty of the grounds, the amazing art and architecture throughout, and the honor to help produce a honey special to so many, we couldn't have picked a better place to continue our beekeeping journey! So happy to have the opportunity to work with the good folks at Green-Wood.

More than just a cemetery...

We invite you to check out the Cemetery's full events calendar, as well as their tours. If you like what they're doing, especially with bees, you might also consider a donation, membership, or just sponsoring one of their hives. A worthy cause, for sure!
